The University of Connecticut began as the Storrs Agricultural School through an act of the Connecticut General Assembly on April 21, 1881. That action stemmed from the philanthropy of two brothers - Charles and Augustus Storrs, who donated land and money to establish a school for boys. In 1893, the General Assembly provided for the admission of women, changed the school to the Storrs Agricultural College, and designated it as Connecticut's land-grant college.
This year marks the 123rd academic year of the University-of-Connecticut. The University of Connecticut is a Carnegie Foundation Research-One University and is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as
- Among the top 25 public universities in the nation, and
- The #1 best public university in New England.5 years running.
