A Few Basics Before Joining Distance Learning Online Courses!

There are some computer terms that you should be familiar with before starting your Distance Education. All Distance Learning Colleges have minimum requirements for the PC or Mac that you will use to participate on a course.

The Operating System is the software that runs your computer and will probable have been pre-installed. The most popular of these are, Windows, Mac OS and Linux. You need to find out what minimum versions are required by the Distance Learning College or University.

The Processor Speed tells you how fast your machine can work, the CPU or Central Processing Unit is the brains of your computer. The speed is measured in megahertz (Mhz) the higher the number; the faster your computer can complete the tasks you set it.

The amount of RAM (Random Access Memory) you machine has also determines how fast your computer can work. RAM is measured in megabytes (256 or 512 MB) and works like your short-term memory.

Your computers Hard Disk is were all your work, and word-processing programs etc are stored. The capacity of your hard disk is measured in gigabytes (80 or 120 GB).

A Graphics Card allows you to display video and graphics on your monitor. The graphics card (and the monitor) decides the quality of the images displayed; it also decides the speed by which the graphics are updated.

A Sound Card allows input and output of sound to your machine. If your computer doesn't have one they can be easily purchased and installed. Remember you will also need speakers or headphones.

Your computer will also need a Modem or Network Card in order for you to connect to the Internet. A modem converts digital information stored on your machine to analog waves that can be sent over telephone lines. Having a network card allows your computer to have a permanent, faster connection to the Internet through a cable modem.

With some, if not all, of your online course material coming on CD (Compact Disk) or DVD (Digital Video Disc) your computer will need a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Drive. CD-ROM drives are practically standard on new machines, but you will need to check that your computer has one. They can be purchased as external units and connected to your machine.
